According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Carlo Ernesto D’Addario, 43, received the prison sentence on Wednesday in Harrisonburg.
D’Addario had pleaded guilty to one drug charge in the case, according to the Washington Post.
Prosecutors say he transported the synthetic drug known as bath salts from Baltimore to Augusta County, where then proceeded to sell them to a local drug dealer.
Bath salts have been known to cause psychotic episodes, hallucinations, and even seizures.
U.S. Attorney Timothy Heaphy says the drugs are extremely “volatile and dangerous,” and adds that they often can lead to violent outbursts.
The federal government has banned their use.
