Jake Layman recorded 14 points to lift the Terps to victory.
Alex Len added 10 points of his own for the Terrapins (17-6, 5-5 ACC), who won their second consecutive game after falling to Duke and Florida State.
Len’s two free throws with 58.4 seconds remaining in the game gave Maryland a 56-53 edge.
After VA Tech‘s Robert Brown missed a jump shot in the lane, Maryland’s Nick Faust hit two free throw shots with 28 seconds left to make it 58-53 contest.
Virginia Tech lost its fifth straight game.
