Just before 2 p.m. EST Tuesday afternoon, police got a phone call from a relative of the man reporting a stolen vehicle. The relative said he was following the vehicle as it traveled down the interstate.
Troopers quickly located the 1999 Saturn, which was being driven by a 23-year-old Bel Air resident.
The man pulled over and a police officer took the keys from the the vehicle. The officer then went back to his patrol car to talk with the driver’s relative.
When another trooper arrived and went to check on the driver, he found him slumped in the drivers seat with a gunshot wound to the head. A .22-caliber Ruger was found in the driver’s lap.
The man was taken to Franklin Square Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation found that the car belonged to the man’s grandparents. He didn’t have permission to use the car.
