His longtime friend George Lazzaro Jr. was killed in the Aberdeen Proving Ground Super Pond on February 1 while performing maintenance.
“Still today, I have trouble believing that a 41-year-old was taken away from a family with four children. … It’s not explainable,” Middleton told Perry Hall Patch.
For several years, Middleton lived next door to Lazzaro in the Bowleys Quarters area.
“It’s still shock(ing),” Middleton said.
Lazzaro, who had moved to the Nottingham area, is survived by his wife and four children, two of whom are in college as well as an 8- and 4-year-old.
Middleton has been encouraging family and friends to purchase raffle tickets to support the Lazzaro College Fund for his friend’s kids.
“The community is really getting behind it,” Middleton said of his efforts. “George and I, we go back many years. George had been a local soccer coach in the area for about 18 years—great neighbor. Great coach. Great friend…and a great father.”
Those who wish to donate to the Lazzaro College Fund can contact Chris Middleton at (443) 992-9174.
Raffle tickets cost $20 and enter you in a drawing to win one of three cash prizes: 1 – $1,000, 2 – $750 or 3 -$500.
Those coming to the March 20th event can also buy tickets at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Middleton says he will also try to sell some of the raffle tickets at this weekend’s Baltimore Blast playoff game at 1st Mariner Arena.
