The Ravens GM told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday that he believes that Reed’s status will be finalized some time this week, and that he hopes to set up a meeting with the all-pro’s agent David Dunn this week.
Reed, 34, wrapped up a two-day visit with the Houston Texans on Friday without striking a deal.
Newsome said this scenario reminds him of the way the Ray Lewis situation played out in 2009, when the legendary linebacker tested the free agency waters before eventually re-signing with the Ravens.
“Four years ago, we went down this same road with Ray,” Newsome said. “Dave always does a very good job of keeping us in the loop. That doesn’t mean that Ed will come back, and it doesn’t mean that he will leave.”
The deciding factor will likely be whether Ozzie can come up with an offer impressive enough to keep Reed around.
Ed Reed, who is getting set to play in his 12th pro NFL season, made $7.2 million in 2012.
