Officials in Texas say a vial containing a deadly virus that can cause hemorrhagic fever has somehow disappeared from a lab, but say there’s likely no cause for alarm.
Officials believe the missing vial, which contains the Guanarito virus, was destroyed during the laboratory’s routine cleaning process – but the investigation is ongoing at this hour.
The virus, which is native to Venezuela, is transmitted via contact with Venezuelan rats.
Experts do not think it is able to survive in American rodents, nor can it be transmitted among humans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was immediately notified once it was discovered last week that the vial had gone missing.
