Jack Bauer is back!

Three years after the FOX series “24” went off the air, it’s returning to television.

With the cancellation of Kiefer Sutherland‘s series “Touch,” he’s free to reprise his role as the nation’s most formidable counter-terrorism agent.

While there had initially been talks of a “24” movie hitting either the big or little screen, FOX officials confirm that a new season of the popular, real-time show will be hitting the airwaves in 2014.

In a bit of a departure from the norm, the new season, called “24: Live Another Day,” will consist of just 12 episodes instead of the usual 24.

The writers reportedly feel it would be better to come up with 12 power-packed episodes rather than 24 episodes with half of them stuffed with filler material.

Sutherland is clearly excited about the project.

“The response to ’24’ is unlike anything I have ever experienced as an actor before,” the actor said in a statement. “To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend. The story ideas from [producer] Howard Gordon are exciting and fresh, and will not disappoint…Make no mistake, my goal is to knock your socks off.”

The new season is expected to debut in 2014.
