Oxbow nearly went wire-to-wire to win the 2013 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas his record 14th Triple Crown race victory.
The 15-1 long shot, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens, took the lead from Goldencents early and won the $1 million race by 1 ¾ lengths, holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute.
Oxbow also managed to dash hopes for a Triple Crown winner this year.
Kentucky Derby winner Orb finished in fourth place.
“I get paid to spoil dreams,” Lukas said after the race. “You can’t mail it in, it’s a different surface, a different time. You gotta line them up and run them.”
