A massive tornado barreled through southern Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, reducing homes and buildings to rubble.
Local forecasters say the storm kicked up a debris cloud approximately 2 miles in diameter as it tore through residential neighborhoods in the Moore area.
Oklahoma City police say southern portions of the city and portions of Moore sustains “major damage… a lot of damage.”
Several cars were flipped over and several homes were blown to pieces, leaving rescue crews to sift through the wreckage.
In advance of the twister, Oklahoma’s House of Representatives stopped work so municipal employees could seek shelter in the basement. TV and radio broadcasters urged residents to take shelter.
“We’re just waiting to see what happens. It’s a mile-wide tornado. It’s still grinding out,” said Mark Meyers, a spokesman for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office. “We are currently on standby for tornado response. Whatever happens, we’ll be ready to respond.”
