Maryland General Hospital to shut down OBGYN services June 30th

Maryland General Hospital Maryland General Hospital to shut down OBGYN services June 30thMaryland General Hospital has announced that it will be shutting down its obstetrics and gynecology services on June 30 due to the fact that the department is “no longer financially viable.”

The University of Maryland Medical System said that the hospital delivered around 1,200 babies about five years ago, but now it delivers a mere 400 newborns per year.

With the University of Maryland Medical Center just one mile away, UMMS considers the low numbers an inefficient use of resources.

Around 15 physicians will be affected by the closure, according to UMMS, but they will likely have opportunities at other medical facilities.

Maryland General Hospital, which will soon be called the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, is located in the 800 block of Linden Avenue.
