Maryland State Police responded to a gruesome crash scene on Saturday morning along the outer loop of the Washington D.C. beltway in the Upper Marlboro area.
Just after 1:45 a.m. ET, a female driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring lost control of the vehicle south of Ritchie Marlboro Road at mile marker 13.
The car hit the center median guardrail and came to rest on the left shoulder of the beltway.
The driver then exited the vehicle and walked in the roadway of I-495 where she was subsequently struck by several cars.
Troopers say the woman’s body was “destroyed beyond recognition” but that they have been able to identify the victim and notify family members.
The outer loop of I-495 was closed for hours due to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing at this hour.
