The State Department says Andrew Pochter was a bystander taking photographs on Friday when he was stabbed and killed by a protester.
Pochter was a student at Kenyon College in Ohio. He was spending the summer in Egypt as an intern for a non-profit organization that teaches English overseas.
His family has released a statement regarding his death.
They say he went to teach English to seven- and eight-year-olds.
The statement went on to say “He went to Egypt because he cared profoundly about the Middle East. He had studied the region, loved the culture, and planned to live and work there in the pursuit of peace and understanding.”
Pochter’s family called him a wonderful man who was looking for new experiences.
