The indictment was prompted by a March incident in Columbia while the officer was off-duty.

Court records indicate that Pfc. Lawrence Cameron Cook assaulted another man, but records did not include any details about the alleged assault.

Cook is currently on no-duty status with pay, and all police powers have been suspended.

Howard County Police Chief William McMahon released the following statement on Friday.

“As the prosecution is now pending, I am unable to comment on the details of this case. But I want Howard County citizens to have confidence that our detectives conducted a thorough criminal investigation into the allegations. We shared the investigation with the Howard County State’s Attorney, who presented the case to the grand jury, resulting in the indictment. We are an agency that has high expectations for our employees, both on-duty and off-duty. We are also an agency that believes strongly in transparency. While this is a difficult situation, it is important that we share this information with the community we serve.”
