The bullpen again failed to seal the deal on Wednesday night as the Orioles lost to the Yankees 5-4.
Tommy Hunter gave up two ninth inning runs as Baltimore’s Wild Card hopes continued to fizzle.
“We’ve got to be better,” said center fielder Adam Jones afterward. “We’ve got to be stronger in the later innings as an offense, and a defense, as a pitching staff. This is a team loss. … As a team, we’ve just got to be that much better. That’s really all there is to it.”
The Orioles are now 16-26 in one-run games this season, worst in the American League.
Robinson Cano hit the tie-breaking home run leading off the ninth, and New York also got solo dingers from Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson.
“That what you ask for,” manager Joe Girardi said. “We have to continue to play well.”
