CUMBERLAND – Investigators from the Maryland State Police and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services are investigating the death of an inmate that occurred in western Maryland on Friday evening.
The victim has been identified as Jason T. Wallace, 29, an inmate of the Western Correctional Institution.
According to prison officials, Wallace had been serving time in connection with robbery charges. Wallace’s body is being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed.
A suspect has been identified and is an inmate at the same facility. There are no charges at this time. Once charges are filed, the suspect will be identified publicly.
Maryland State Police Homicide investigators were called to the Western Correctional Institution by prison officials, to investigate the death of an inmate shortly after 9:30 p.m. ET Friday night.
During the inmates’ recreation period, correctional officers were notified of an unconscious inmate in a cell.
Officers responded and found Wallace lying on the floor of his cell. The officers immediately attempted to render aid and notified prison medical personnel. They were not able to revive Wallace.
An investigation is ongoing at this hour.
