Manny Machado has knee surgery, likely to miss Opening Day 2014

Manny Machado Injury Manny Machado has knee surgery, likely to miss Opening Day 2014BALTIMORE – First, Manny Machado didn’t need knee surgery.  Then, he did need knee surgery and was expected to miss 4-6 months.

Now, club officials say the Orioles’ third baseman will need about six months to recover and likely miss Opening Day 2014 after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.

The surgery was performed by Dodgers orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in L.A.

The O’s announced that Machado opted for surgery last week. The surgery, which took just over an hour to perform, went as expected, and Machado is expected to need about six month to recover.

“The six months is conservative,” said Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette. “The schedule will not drive Manny’s rehabilitation. The doctors and Manny will determine when he’s ready.”

Machado was hurt in Tampa Bay on September 23 when he hyper extended his knee while stepping over first base while running out a ground ball.
