BALTIMORE – Just days after winning the 2013 Baltimore Marathon, a local teacher has won another big race.
Dave Berdan won the 2013 Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, winning the race for the fifth straight year.
The annual race has raised about $40 million for breast cancer research over the past two decades.
“This event is so near and dear to my heart,” said Berdan, whose wife’s grandmother died of breast cancer. “Winning the race is great, but it’s not really about that. It’s about finding a cure for this horrible disease. And if by winning the marathon and the Race for the Cure, I can bring more attention to the cause, then so be it.”
The Garrison Forest science teacher and cross country coach was one of about 20,000 people who participated in the 2013 Race for the Cure.
This year, Team Garrison Forest raised about $18,000 for Komen.
