A Monumental Occasion takes place Thursday, December 5, 2013 with pre-event festivities at 5:00 p.m. ET in Mount Vernon. The official ceremony begins at 6 p.m. with the official lighting at approximately 7:45 p.m.
The evening includes musical performances by Morgan State University Choir, Baltimore School for the Arts Tap Dancing Santas, and Soulful Symphony. The monument will be lit by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and a special guest. The event ends with a colorful fireworks and laser finale choreographed to music.
Mount Vernon Place is located in the 600-700 block of North Charles Street.
A Monumental Occasion is coordinated by Downtown Partnership of Baltimore in conjunction with the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and the Department of Recreation and Parks.

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation would like to advise motorists of the temporary road closures which will be implemented for the annual lighting of the Washington Monument.
In preparation for the event, the following streets will be closed to through traffic on Thursday, December 05, 2013 with detours and parking restrictions in effect:
9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. – West Mt. Vernon Place from Charles to Cathedral Streets
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. – North Charles Street from Centre to Madison Streets
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. – East Mt. Vernon Place from Charles to St. Paul Streets
Motorists traveling in this vicinity should be on the watch for pedestrians attending the event and are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes.
